The Story of the Bobblehead Dave

The Bobblehead Dave is an original creation of Brother C. B. of Xi chapter. During the Province V Assembly at Mu Omicron Pi in March 2002, a whimsical bobbing-head graphic appeared in the PowerPoint presentation of the Xi chapter report. That graphic bore the face of Brother Dave Maszkiewicz, our beloved Grand Counselor. The actual graphic is posted here for posterity, labeled “Image A.” This masterful creation was cited as a phoney fundraiser idea, and was never intended to be anything more than a site gag. At the closing session of the Assembly, however, a formal resolution was passed which stated that “an exploratory committee be established to look into the production of the Bobblehead Dave.” After gauging this initial level of interest as enormous, Brother Andrew Frasco of Xi chapter spear-headed the effort and the project has snow-balled ever since.

In September 2002, during the Province V Midyear at Gamma Chi, Brother Maszkiewicz was consulted about the project concept. He consented to the use of his image, with the stipulation that all profits be donated to Special Olympics, the already chosen Province V community service goal. Even though Dave found the idea acceptable, the full scope of the project was hidden in a shroud, except to a very few people, until the unveiling in March 2003.

With the help of Brother B., multiple bobblehead designs and color schemes were created until a suitable style was agreed upon. Some of those designs are shown below, labeled “Images B through G.” Six production companies were compared, and the Imprintstore.com was chosen due to its low setup costs and low initial volume requirement. The agreed upon graphic was presented to Mary Weger at the Imprintstore.com, and she acknowledged the feasibility of the project. During this time, random and informal polls were being taken in certain chapters of both Province V and Province II, Dave's home Province, to gauge the interest in the availability of such an item. The interest for a bobblehead of this nature was still rated as extremely high. At this point it was decided that if initial production did not begin by December 31, the project would have to be scrapped. In December 2002, at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, a select group of Brothers was invited to view a PowerPoint presentation given by Brother Frasco to recruit financiers to fund the project. The production run of 250 units was decided on at this time, and as funding began to trickle in, the order was placed and a check for the full amount was faxed to ImprintStore on December 30, 2002.

Initial clay sculpting and painting work was done by The ImprintStore during January and February, and the first color production model was ready for our approval in early March. This painted mockup was presented to the Province V Assembly, exactly one year after the original design was unveiled.

PayPal was chosen as the main electronic channel for funding for two reasons. First, PayPal’s record-keeping structure would allow for auditing procedures of the finances for the project. Second, Brother Frasco already had a Premier account set up. It was decided that checks and cash would also be acceptable, but strict bookkeeping procedures were implemented to track all purchases.

Now, 12 months later, we are able to bring you this offering in conjunction with Province V philanthropy to benefit Special Olympics.

Thank you for your interest in supporting Special Olympics!

And to Mary Weger of the ImprintStore, this project would not have been possible without you. Thank you for your support and your guidance.

Sincerely,
